Problem: Framingham State College of Massachusetts wanted to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Challenger mission and honor the pioneering spirit of FSC alumna Christa McAuliffe, the teacher astronaut who perished in the Challenger disaster, without focusing on the disaster.

Solution:

Parker & James planned and directed a series of programs that targeted different audiences:

  • Christa's Teachers: invited the public to honor a favored teacher
  • Christa, This One's for You and the Challenger Crew: a program for teachers and their students from across the US
  • Christa Remembered: The Mission Continues: an Exhibit on display at the Massachusetts State House

Results:

This year-long program generated tremendous publicity for the college and:

  • Reached more than 25 million people through national print and broadcast media.
  • Generated more than 5000 requests from classroom teachers for information from the McAuliffe Center at FSC.
  • Attracted 225,000 people from around the world to participate in remembrance activities

For this campaign, Parker & James was honored by the Publicity Club of Boston with its highest award, the Super Bell.
